Compression levels

Scales down and re-compresses photos and scans inside the PDF. Text stays selectable and searchable; links, bookmarks and form fields are kept. Right for most files.
Smaller
Lower image resolution for a smaller file. Small print on scans may look slightly soft when zoomed in.
Smallest
Tries both shrinking images further and turning each page into an image, and keeps whichever is smaller. If pages become images, text can no longer be selected or searched and links and form fields are removed; the result says so. Fine when you only need to submit a scanned copy.
Target size
Pick 5 MB, 2 MB or 1 MB. The tool starts at Recommended and steps up until the file fits; if it had to turn pages into images, the result says so.
Your file never leaves your device
Your files are read and processed by your own browser. They are not uploaded to HKPDF or any server. The network is only used to load the page and the tool itself.

Is my file uploaded?
No. Compression runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and the site doesn't log file names or contents.
Why do some PDFs barely shrink?
A PDF's size mostly comes from photos and scans. Text files exported from Word or Excel are already small, so there's little to remove. If the result isn't smaller, the tool tells you to keep your original instead of giving you a bigger file.
Will it lower the quality?
Recommended scales images to about 170 dpi on an A4 page, which is hard to tell apart on screen or in print; Smaller is about 120 dpi. Text, lines and vector graphics are not changed.
An online form only accepts 2 MB. What should I do?
Pick the 2 MB target and tap Compress and download. The tool uses the lightest level that gets under 2 MB and shows the new size.
Can I compress a protected PDF?
Yes if it opens without a password and only restricts editing or printing; the output has no restrictions. PDFs that need a password to open aren't supported yet.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Open hkpdf.com/en/compress in Safari or Chrome, pick the PDF, tap Compress and download, then Save file. Use a computer for very large scans.
